Global Africa Translation Fellowship 2025 – Grant Up to $5,000 for Translators

The Global Africa Translation Fellowship, offered by The Africa Institute, provides grant funding of up to $5,000 to support translations of significant African and African Diaspora texts into English or Arabic (other languages may also be considered). This non-residential fellowship is open to applicants from across the Global South and aims to make African literature, poetry, prose, and critical theory more accessible worldwide.

 

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Open to scholars and translators from the Global South.
  • Translations must be from African and African Diaspora works into English or Arabic (other languages may be considered).
  • Projects may include previously untranslated works, re-translations of classics, poetry, prose, or critical theory collections.
  • Applications from independent scholars, academics, and professional translators are encouraged.

  • Grant funding between $1,000 – $5,000, based on project scope and quality.
  • Flexibility to work remotely – no residency requirement.
  • Opportunity to complete and contribute to the expansion of African literature globally.
  • Institutional recognition – projects will be reviewed by The Africa Institute’s faculty and research fellows.
  • Funding disbursed in two parts – half at project start, half upon completion.

Required Documents:
  • Two-page CV/résumé including education, institutional affiliation, and key works.
  • Two-page project summary outlining the translation, its significance, and completion timeline.
  • 4–5-page sample of the original text and its translation.
  • Copyright status explanation (if applicable).
